I’m reminded of the once-starrey-eyed criminal defense attorney portrayed by Mary Kay Place in the movie “The Big Chill” decades ago. She found herself reassessing her entire belief system after realizing virtually the entirety of her client base was so damn guilty. Some of us who have generally voted Republican most of our adult lives have been endlessly hoping throughout these past seven, long, interminable years that members of what once was the party of Lincoln would finally dummy up and have an epiphany similar to Mary Kay Place’s regarding their Orange God King. Not gonna happen. A GOP enthralled to Trump is beyond salvation and no amount of deference extended to party members in order to respect their tender sensitivities is something they don’t deserve. Keep hammering away, Matt. Like Marciano, I suspect you’ll retire undefeated.

I appreciate both you and the reader for sharing your thoughts. If I am honest, I actually don't know anyone who will admit to being a dyed in the wool Trumper. What I do know, which I find much more concerning, is a number of Republicans, who "don't like Trump", but would never, ever, ever, vote for a Democrat. They tolerate heinous behavior, because ya know, Democrats intervene too much in the economy, want to force corporations to follow their ideology, are anti-freedom, and fiscally irresponsible. Can someone please tell me how the Republican party is materially different in any of these 4 areas?

All that nonsense is a tempest in a tea cup, however, compared to the absolute corruption and degradation of the leadership of Christendom. To be clear, I am a none, but I am 100% in favor following the teachings of Jesus. We would be MUCH better off if more people went to church (or temple or mosque) and actually lived a life full of compassion. My most frightening reads are David French's reporting on the state of Christianity, now.

And, not for nothin', what is the absolute obsession with trans/gay/queer, whatever, behavior? David French described a meeting with a bunch of pastors, who peppered him with questions about this topic. He asked them, how many of you have any direct contact with these issues - no hands went up. When he asked, how many of you face the challenge of church goers consuming pornography - all the hands went up. The point isn't to ridicule the pastors. The point is how is it we have not been able to figure out how scapegoating works thousands of years after it was introduced!

While I have not had a conversation with a real Trumper, I have had a conversation with someone in a cult. It is non-productive. I have no answers, except that we stick to our Constitution, the rule of law, and, maybe, just maybe, we try to have a little compassion. Because asking for critical thinking is just NOT gonna happen.
