“Pain visits us all. Sometimes in dramatic fashion… sometimes in undramatic fashion…”

My household’s had its share of undramatic pain in the last two months. We’ve lost an appendix (not sorry to see it go, but its needing to go is pretty serious, especially when it’s your kid’s), gained an autism diagnosis, gained COVID, lost the kids’ only remaining grandparent — a lawyer who somehow had none of her end-of-life plans officially documented (arghhhh!) — to a stroke just as the hospital was about to discharge her as healthy enough for rehab, had our car totaled by a speeder, and my computer totaled by (apparently) its fancy-schmancy graphics card.

I’m supposed to be writing Oma’s (grandma’s) obituary — but I just can’t on a weeny little phone. (Whine about how I can’t in internet comments, though? The weeny little phone interface is plenty good for that!)

What we have done, though, is take our kids, at least once a week, on short hikes to enjoy the fall color. Hikes their Oma would have loved, but could almost never take with them while she was alive due to her recurring health problems — each problem described by her doctors as surmountable until finally, one wasn’t.

One of your best yet - although tbh, I say that several times a year at least. Please know that I count you among the scattered, glittering collection of life's sustaining beauties.
