You touched a sore spot. For the longest time I eschewed the church because of all the hypocrites, until I realized that hypocrites don’t invalidate the faith, they just don’t practice it. But I returned to the faith and I just can’t fathom how people can call themselves Christians who don’t practice what Jesus taught. I just want to shake them and say “have you read the New Testament? Maybe you should try it again.” At least read the Sermon on the Mount and make a checklist to see how you measure up. (For a great explanation of how southern white church goers of olden days practiced and justified their racism read “White too Long”). I try to be mindful of one thing I remember from the Bible which says something like: Beware false prophets…and there will be plenty to choose from. Thanks for the piece.

As someone with a similarly tortured relationship to my Southern Baptist roots, this is an extremely helpful and comforting piece.
