Where is MY GUY JOHN McCain?.........Oh crap, STILL dead, right? And he got beat, which in the US is sort of the same thing. Well then, I will vote for a ham sandwich before I vote for the traitor Donald "Maduro" Trump. Trump's endless lies, attempt to overturn a fair election with fake electors and other such chicanery should have him sitting in jail someday. He sat idly by while his Trumpanzees looked for his VP to hang him, along with any other congresspersons they found, and the GOP is upset with Harris' laugh? Or that she has no biological children?
I don't know about "savior", but at least not near certain loss with Joe declining as he has. He deserves a medal and a rest, and he will get one of those. I suspect even with the top tier VP picks VP Harris has to choose from that the whole shebang will come down to 30,000 people spread across Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and maybe Arizona.
As always, I find your sense of humor to be very engaging. As an old, white liberal I agree with your thoughts on putting out the fire first, before trying to unblock the bathroom toilet. I read and hear so many negative thoughts about Ms. Harris that I am sure there is some fire where there is so much smoke.
Who do you feel would make a better candidate and a better President? There is always danger in changing horses in mid-stream, but beating a dead horse is no ticket for success. (In case you haven't noticed, I love metaphors.)
It was a little before your time and mine also, but Harry Truman wasn't well thought of, but he turned out to a good president. Yes I know, the Right dislikes him, but none the less he rose to the occasion and I feel performed very well. If she wins we may have a Harry Truman, and maybe for 8 years to boot!
To be honest, we white men haven't done such a good job, so maybe a change will be a good thing - unlike the Trump presidency.
Are you implying I'm a sexist, Biker Chick? I called Biden "Grandpa Joe," in this piece, and Obama, "Barack H. Christ." I regularly call Trump by his first name, "Lucifer." So I'd say we're even-Stephen. (Another male first name. Named after Stephen Baldwin, I believe.)
Well, I can't speak about the others. But I call her "Hillary" because we used to date. This was well before she had Vince Foster killed, then opened up that child-molesting pizzeria. (She changed.)
I'll probably come around to voting for Kamala Harris. I ended voting for Hilary and Joe, but I felt more comfortable with those votes because I had a better sense where they stood and where I differed. I don't have a good sense where Kamala Harris stands on most issues and voting for a blank slate makes me uneasy. Maybe it doesn't matter because I didn't think Joe Biden was going to have an Elizabeth Warren-lite White House either.
Veep is good, but Yes, Minister is the greatest political comedy of all time. And Iannucci's other political workplace comedy, The Thick of It, is probably in second place.
Does anyone remember the infamous Robert Hur report that said Joe Biden was a kindly, well-intentioned but forgetful, old man who should not be prosecuted? The Democrats were outraged a such slander until the first debate when Biden proved Hur's point beyond any possible doubt. Then they couldn't agree more and could not get rid of him fast enough.
I know that hindsight is always crystal clear, but the fact that President Biden did not initiate this process of his own accord no later than January 1st of this year is absolutely inexcusable. He could have gone into the history books as a great statesman who sacrificed his own interests for the good of the country. I know that his departure is now being spun that way even as I type this, but the reality is that he, like Julius Caesar, had to be stabbed from all directions by his longtime supporters.
But the worst part about this scenario is that we could have had an open primary process where the presidential cream would have risen to the top and the eventual candidate would represent the broad consensus of the best the Democrat party has to offer. Instead, we are being asked to slam-dunk a candidate who is easily disliked and easily caricatured. This is especially if you are a racist at heart, or a misogamist, or just simply don't like toothy women with a giant smile and a loud laugh. And then there is the matter of having very few real accomplishments and spending her early years as Willie Brown's arm candy. Some even say that Brown's long-estranged wife was often on the other arm at certain social occasions. The MAGA haters are going to constantly yell these matters from the mountain tops between now and November.
To her credit, Kamala Harris has gotten off to a rousing start. Good for her! And good for everyone who realizes the urgency of the moment and the shortness of time. Hopefully this past week is not just a sugar high that crashes "bigly." Everyone needs to remember that the alternative is Donald Trump and all that MAGA represents; and now it also has come to represent J. D. Vance - who seems to be digging his own hole.
All of this leads to the importance of Harris' pick for the V.P. slot. It has to be the ultimate DEI pick that balances Harris' weaknesses with solid strengths and accomplishments. He (yes, I dared to say he) must be the very best. So far, the Democrats have ignored my recommendations of Jon Meacham or Josh Shapiro and chose to go with Harris. I have a sneaking suspicion that they will do so once again and pick Roy Cooper of North Carolina. If Cooper is the very best choice, who will bring excellencies to the ticket and will increase Harris' chances of winning, so be it. But if he is selected simply because he is term limited, and any other choice would cost the Democrats a seat they currently possess, the Democrats will truly deserve their hard-earned loss. And God help us all!
Yes, Jon Meacham, the writer, presidential historian and political commentator. You will see him often on Morning Joe and in other talk settings. He is high grade material. My recommendation of Meacham was for the top of the ticket, not the V.P.
Nothing wrong with being on Team Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers but yeah, Matt, know your ceiling. I did my Word Up karaoke a few times back in the day (which even by writing that should exclude me from a Cameo cameo on its face) and am only thankful that phones and cameras had not been introduced yet.
1st) This was divinely inspired: "To which democracy responded, 'Now you know how I felt on January 6.”
2nd) You've got Harris all wrong. No one in the admin did anything to help her, and four years has tuned her up. She was not the CA. AG and Senator by accident. (Or even Willie Brown.) She now has excellent aides and boatloads of money, and as my mother used to say, "a mouth on her." Fatty McFelon is not bad, as insults go. She can also talk circles around Fatty, which he may not give her the chance to do, as he is (rightly) afraid to debate her. Stay tuned, as everyone is now saying.
Why do, or how can people ignore that she was ELECTED to be California's Attorney General X2 and US Senator. While California is not a red state, they have elected Nixon, Reagan, Schwarzenegger, Earl Warren, Duekmejian...as their governors.
Compare her experience to pre-president Barack Obama.
I think the claim of ignorance is a very brave and authentic position to take. Why brave? Because ignorance is an honest description of what we know about the future and what we appear to have learned from the past...not much.
I never understood why getting laid by Willie Brown was disqualifying. I wouldn't sleep with him, on account of my straightness. But he was one of the most entertaining mayors in history.
Respectfully, the VP has two jobs under the constitution: presiding over the Senate and succeeding the president in the event of death, inability to serve, or removal from office.
81 million Americans voted for Biden/Harris in 2020, an absolute majority. Fourteen million (87%) of those who voted in Democratic primaries this year voted for Biden, knowing full well she would continue to be his VP pick for the general (or at least having no reason to suppose it would be someone else).
In contrast, 17 million (76%) of those who voted in the Republican primaries voted for the orange menace without knowing or caring who his VP pick would be.
We don’t know who Harris will tap to be her VP pick. But whoever that turns out to be will not be as dangerous, loathsome, or weird as Trump’s pick was.
However we got here, it’s a bit late for quibbling about process.
I am sure I will disagree with some of Harris policies. But I’m not worried about her trying to stage a coup. I really don’t understand the “she is not qualified” arguments. District Atty of San Francisco to Attorney General of California to United States Senator (Intelligence Committee) to Vice President?
I guess she missed being a weird ass reality TV idiot, but so be it.
Obama had scant experience compared to, let's say, a 2 term governor. Maybe Obama wasn't your cup of tea, but he was someone you knew wouldn't sail our ship into an iceberg.
Great piece Matt, and I laughed a lot, something that is very good.
I will say that I am far less depressed since Kamala came on the scene, and I was skeptic before, so, for that I grateful, the good vibes are much better.
Speaking of which, that song is awesome and definitely a good beat to dance to, I was dancing in my chair ( my bad knee today being mean to me, prevented me from standing up and actually dancing, which I love.
So, tell us how you REALLY feel about K… I’ll take her 6 days and twice on Sunday over Jabba uh I mean the Orange Fraud cum Putie to oversee the coming militia whacko times. Now I’m gonna go find my Mount Gay 1703 and eagerly await the next Hummingbird Arrival in the backyard….

The Kamala go-go challenge is genius!

How about ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”?
Why do we say “Kamala,” “Nikki,” and “Hillary” and call the others “Trump,” “Biden” and “Obama?”
I did say “we” as in the collective. I’m honestly curious? It’s odd to me. Sexism is about as low on the totem pole of things I care about.
Well, I can't speak about the others. But I call her "Hillary" because we used to date. This was well before she had Vince Foster killed, then opened up that child-molesting pizzeria. (She changed.)
Are there any other political comedies other than Veep?
Yeah. It's called Campaign 2024. And it's playing daily on pretty much every channel, everywhere. Oops. Did I actually say that out loud?
If you like British humor, "The Thick Of It" is brilliant.
I'll probably come around to voting for Kamala Harris. I ended voting for Hilary and Joe, but I felt more comfortable with those votes because I had a better sense where they stood and where I differed. I'm sure she's center left. Ain't that better than Road-to-Hell?
Veep is good, but Yes, Minister is the greatest political comedy of all time. And Iannucci's other political workplace comedy, The Thick of It, is probably in second place.
I do need to get on those......But I doubt any of the actors are as hot as Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
She's in my age wheelhouse. She's a bit old for you. Do you have elder care experience on your CV?
Sometimes the heart just wants what it wants.

Shapiro is very much in the running.

Trust you wore the Cameo cod-piece, Pete. And I'm glad I missed it!

I do not know anything anymore since the moronic grifter was elected president.
I think the claim of ignorance is a very brave and authentic position to take. Why brave? Because ignorance is an honest description of what we know about the future and what we appear to have learned from the past...not much.
Covid brain fog?
I never understood why getting laid by Willie Brown was disqualifying. I wouldn't sleep with him, on account of my straightness. But he was one of the most entertaining mayors in history.
If not the ugliest.

'Nuff said.
